Trade In Your Tranny

Language is a wonderful thing. Every community has its trigger words which though innocuous to the wider world, set in motion a particular reaction within that community. Politicians refer to exploiting them as "dog-whistling".
This morning the UK-based geek's favourite news organ, The Register, published a piece about a trade-in scheme for analogue radios.
I'd better not let my wife see the sub-heading. She might get ideas.

  1. I used to read 'the Topper' comic, and after reading the 'Danny's tranny' strip I knew that a tranny was a device that made things invisible. I foolishly asked for one for christmas (i was not very old then), and was disappointed to receive a small radio instead.

Wo betide any small child that should ask for one now, they would end up in therapy.

  4. @suzie: Wow, that takes me back! Kids nowadays probably want iPods. Jumpers for goalposts...

@Josie: That's right, it's now clearer most of the time, but sounds like bubbling mud if you stand in the wrong place.

@Angie: Well survived :) Mrs. J has yet to read this particular piece.

  5. I don't own anything but tube radios anymore, except the one in my car.

Sorry, they just sound WAY better. Digital radio (and transistor for that matter too) is an enormous scam job.

  6. Blimey, that was unexpected. I do own a DAB digital radio, but one of my geekier weaknesses is a respectable collection of valve(British for tube) radios. FM sounds at its best on a late 1950s Bush with a full class A valve output stage.
